Sepia Outlaw captures David Tennant in his unforgettable role in Fright Night. He’s a charismatic, irreverent, vampire-hunting showman who steals every scene he steps into. Here, he’s portrayed in a sensual, cowboy-like posture: satin robe open, cigarette in hand, impossible to ignore. Both confident and chaotic, he embodies the playful danger that made his character such an unexpected highlight of the film.

Atmosphere & Color Work

The palette blends warm sepia tones with subtle rainbow iridescence. The mix echoes the vibrant light that seems to settle on him in shifting hues. These prismatic reflections are used sparingly but deliberately, creating the impression that the light dances across his skin, fabric, and smoke. It’s a color language that I love to explore, and here it becomes part of his allure, dangerous, magnetic, and slightly unearthly.

Textures & Character Details

Working on his satin robe was one of the most enjoyable challenges in the piece. The material shifts between soft shine and deeper folds, catching the rainbow reflections in ways that enrich the texture. His jewellery includes a small nod to Crowley, a playful reference connecting two of Tennant’s most iconic roles. Altogether, the textures, fabrics and gestures emphasize the fun. It gives a larger-than-life energy the actor brought to the film, the kind of role where you can push expression, lighting and mood further than usual.

Materials

Sepia Outlaw is created using colored pencils and Posca markers on Strathmore Toned Tan paper, 118 g/m².
The format is 14.8 × 21.6 cm, allowing for detailed work while maintaining the intimacy of a small portrait.
The toned paper adds warmth to the sepia palette, while the combination of dry pencil work and precise Posca highlights gives the piece both softness and crisp definition.
